How the day works

The usual format is a private charter of four to eight hours with a skipper included and the boat reserved for your group alone. You choose the departure time, and the skipper shapes the route around the sea and wind that day.

Many boats are based on the Canal do Itajuru, the waterway linking the Araruama lagoon to the sea, which runs right through town. The run out passes Forte São Mateus, the seventeenth-century fort at the mouth of the channel, before opening onto Praia do Forte.

Where a fast boat gets you

Northward along the coast lie Praia das Conchas and Praia do Peró, backed by dunes and progressively emptier the further you go. Ilha do Japonês, inside the lagoon, is a common short stop with shallow, calm water that works well with small children.

Heading the other way, it’s a short run around the cape to the Arraial do Cabo side, where Praia do Forno and the island beaches sit. That stretch is exposed and can get choppy in the afternoon, so morning departures usually make for a better crossing.

What to expect from the water

The clarity here comes from upwelling — cold, deep currents rising along this coast — which is what makes the region a diving destination. The trade-off surprises visitors expecting tropical temperatures: the water is genuinely cold compared with the rest of Brazil. Bring a towel and something warm for the ride back.

What’s included

A skipper comes with the boat. Fuel, food, drinks, snorkelling gear and extra hours vary by boat and are confirmed with our team in each quote. Some piers charge a small boarding fee paid locally. All prices are starting prices and change with the date, the number of guests and the route.

When to go

High season runs from December to March, when the town fills and the best dates go first. Water clarity swings with wind and swell from week to week, so it isn’t purely a matter of month. April, May and October usually combine good weather, quiet anchorages and much better availability.

Booking your charter

Navegue Temporada is a Brazilian boat rental platform, and we arrange everything directly with you over WhatsApp or email. Tell us the date, how many guests are coming and whether you’re after snorkelling stops or a relaxed day of swimming and sun, and we’ll suggest what fits.

The full local fleet, covering both sides of this coast, is on boat rental in Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo. Many guests pair it with boat rental in Búzios, half an hour up the road, or a day in the city — see boat rental in Rio de Janeiro. For island scenery and calmer bays, there’s boat rental in Angra dos Reis. Chartering in Europe? Our sister company Portugal Boat covers Lisbon and the Algarve.
