Barra is the natural starting point if you’re staying in the west of Rio — Barra itself, Recreio, Jacarepaguá or the São Conrado side. Instead of crossing the city to reach the marinas downtown, you board a few minutes from the beach.
The route out is part of the day. Boats based here sit in the lagoon and canal system behind the beach, then run out through the Barra channel to the sea, past the beachfront and out toward the islands.
Possible departure points include the marinas along the Barra canal and the lagoon system behind Avenida Lúcio Costa. Some boats listed for Barra also operate from Marina da Glória, on the other side of the city, depending on where the owner keeps them that season. We confirm the exact pier before your charter.
The most common direction is south-west, along Barra and Recreio beaches toward Pontal, Prainha and Grumari — a stretch of coast backed by protected forest and far less built up than the beaches near Copacabana. Just offshore lie the Tijucas islands, a small group of granite islands with clear water often used as a swimming and snorkelling stop.
Heading the other way, itineraries can run past São Conrado, under the cliffs of Pedra da Gávea, and on toward Ipanema, Leblon and the Cagarras islands. Longer days can continue into Guanabara Bay for the classic view of Sugarloaf Mountain from the water. Overnight and multi-day charters are possible on some boats, on request.
